Channeling the good work of both Gary Numan and ESG, the newest offering from Stones Throw signings Automatic is a metallic slice of minimalist electro-punk. Opening with a simple yet effective bass line, crispy hi-hits add to the industrial feel of the track as icy synthesizers beckon a fresh wave of 80s nostalgia. The dead-pan delivery of the reverb-drenched vocals adds a further uncanny layer to 'Calling It' - a song which captures the sensation of being adrift in a wide-open space and the desire to rip it all up and start over.
